Boat & Walking Tour FAQs

We have tried to answer all potential questions. If we haven’t answered your question please don’t hesitate to contact us on 01646 696370.

If there is something you particularly want to find out please discuss that with us and if it’s possible we will help to provide it.

What wildlife will I see?
Whilst Pembrokeshire has some fantastic flora and fauna, wildlife is often by nature shy and elusive. Walking with Discover Coast & Cleddau in Pembrokeshire however, is a great way to get closer to our wildlife and we will always see something of interest. Obviously we cannot guarantee a sighting of many creatures but we can usually guarantee some of the rarer plants and insects and more sedentary wildlife that often gets overlooked.

How do I book?
Booking is easy – please visit our website www.coastandcleddau.co.uk or ring 01646 696370.

What do I need to bring?
You will need stout walking shoes or boots, something to drink and eat (lots of snacks are best) waterproofs, maybe a spare layer depending on the time of year, sunglasses, sun cream and a hat are a good idea. For cooler times of the year and days a warm hat and gloves are beneficial. For whole days, you will need a small packed lunch as well as snacks and plenty to drink. Not all walks pass suitable places to refill drinks or buy extra food. Some of our half and full day trips include a lunch option. Although not essential we would recommend if you have walking poles to bring them along on the trip. A rucksack or backpack to keep your belongings and water bottle. You are responsible for carrying your own water, we do not allow anyone on these trips without a bottle of water so please make sure you bring a bottle or flask with you. Water will also be available to purchase from our hub at the meeting point before we board the boat.

How far is it?
We go at a pace to take in our surroundings so a walk of 3 hours may actually only cover 3-4 miles but there is so much to see that is seems much further. Please make sure you are confident in walking the distance of specific trip before booking.

Do I need to be fit?
You need to be able to walk for a half day or whole day. Walking in Pembrokeshire does involve steep hills, rough footpaths and tracks so a reasonable level of fitness is required. You will be required to complete a medical questionnaire on the day prior to your walk to say you are fit and healthy on the day and able to complete the walk. We ask that you notify our walking guide of any health issues prior to the walk.

What if I become ill during the day?

Should it be necessary for a member of the group to be taking prescribed medication or suffer from a medical condition that could impede their progress or make them suddenly unwell, they should make the group leader aware immediately. The group leader is first aid trained and will make an informed decision. Should the group leader feel the need to return, the whole group will be led back to the start together as one group.
Walking with younger folk is great fun and rewarding for them so we welcome youngsters of 8 years and upwards. Under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or other adult. Please note if bringing a child under 16 years, please make sure they are capable of undertaking a walk that’s several kilometres long.

Can I bring my dog?
Unfortunately we cannot allow dogs on our boat so you won’t be able to bring your dog with you on our walking tours.

Is it safe?
Getting outdoors always comes with some level of risk but walking in Pembrokeshire is generally a very safe activity. Gordon Smith is an experienced walking guide with first aid qualifications. There are Risk Assessments and Emergency Procedures in place for our walks and activities and emergency equipment is carried on all walks. You must provide details of any medical conditions or any other potential issues before making a confirmed booking. You will be required on the day to complete our medical questionnaire and confirm you’re fit and healthy to take part in the day’s activities.

Can I get a refund?

If the trip is deemed to be unsafe due to adverse weather or sea conditions then a full refund will be given. For reasons of your own unfortunately you will not be able to receive a refund if less than 24 hours is given.

Are the walks access friendly?
Due to accessing our boat on and off pontoons and some of the tricky terrain that can be encountered along the coast paths, we don’t recommend anyone with walking difficulties on these trips. If in doubt then please contact our walking guide Gordon Smith who will advise you. Please ring 01646 696370 for all enquiries.
